Its use of special effects is the main feature of the film. Hatchet 3 uses a majority of practical makeup effects and sets. This is a departure from many horror movies nowadays that heavily rely on CG effects. The film also has several truly terrifying moments.

The cast gives a strong performance and Kane Hodder standing out as the most terrifying villain. It's like a slasher film from the 1980s, with the dialogue being a bit too tongue-in-cheek and campy. There are moments of humor throughout the film which add humour to bloody action.
